Why did my modem disconnect unexpectedly?

Why does my Windows 3.1 Internet program work perfectly sometimes yet at other times they hang or display strange error messages.

I am using Windows 3.1 and have noticed decreased performance or sporadic difficulty connecting. What might be causing this?

Why do I get an error message during dial-up?

Why do I get the error message "Cannot connect, server may be down?"

Why do I get the error message, "Netscape unable to locate server. The server does not have a DNS entry. Check the server name in the location (URL) and try again."

Why did my modem disconnect unexpectedly?

This is almost always due to one of the following reasons:

1. The phone line that your modem is connected to has call waiting service, and a call came in for you during the time you were connected. The call waiting tone caused your modem to disconnect.

In the appropriate location for your system (Windows: Trumpet Winsock; Windows 95: Dial-Up Networking; Macintosh: ConfigPPP), insert "70#," (including the comma) in front of Borealis's dial-up telephone number. This will disable the call waiting feature for the duration of your Internet connection and then automatically re-enable it. once you are disconnected

2. During your connection, a telephone extension on the same line as your modem was picked up in an attempt to place a call or you live in an apartment with an entry system that is connected to your telephone and a visitor was attempting to reach you. Both of these events will cause your modem to disconnect.

A possible solution to this is to ask your roommates not to try using the phone while your modem is connected, or to use another phone line for your modem.

3. Your phone line has a message service. If you have messages waiting for you, the phone line makes a beeping sound that can disconnect the modem.

Be sure you have checked for messages before starting your modem.

Why does my Windows 3.1 Internet program work well sometimes and not at all or periodically other times?

This is generally caused by starting the software in the wrong order. The key factor is that when you are starting or exiting Trumpet, you must not have any other Internet applications running. Therefore, at the beginning of a session, be sure to start Trumpet and ensure you get the login succeeded message. Next, start any desired Internet applications (e.g. Netscape, Eudora). When you are finished using these and wish to disconnect, be certain to close all Internet applications before disconnecting and exiting Trumpet.

Also note that if you start or exit your applications out of sequence by mistake, your system will not function correctly again until you have restarted Windows (i.e. exit to DOS, and type "win").

Make a note of these steps before connecting to the Internet because they cannot be viewed while connecting. Be sure to follow the steps in exact sequence.

1. If you are connected, close all running Internet programs except Trumpet Winsock. Now, disconnect the modem in Trumpet (Dialer, Bye) and exit Trumpet.

2. Start Trumpet again. Select File, Setup. Check to see that the following settings are correct:

  • IP address: 0.0.0.0
  • MTU: 576
  • TCP RWIN: 2144
  • TCP MSS: 536
  • Baud Rate: one of 19200, 38400, or 57600
Click OK. When prompted to restart Trumpet, click OK.

3. Check the Trace menu in Trumpet to ensure none of the entries has a check mark beside it. If any entry has a check mark, remove it.

4. Exit Trumpet again. Now start Trumpet and your Internet programs in the correct order as described above.

Why do I get an error message during dial-up?

1. This problem is generally caused by an incorrect password. Check to see if you left the CAPS lock on. Passwords are case sensitive. Generally, passwords are entered in lowercase, but if your password was created with uppercase letters in it, be sure to enter it that way when dialling-up.

2. When entering your user name, do not include the "@bcgroup.net" portion of your email address. Only your user name is required.

3. Accounts are disabled when your account is overdue. Please stay up to date on your payments.

Why do I get the error message "Cannot connect, server may be down"?

This message occurs when there is a problem with the host server you are trying to connect to. It is a problem that we cannot fix. If Borealis is the host you are trying to connect to, please notify us immediately (pgweb.com) email link or (562-0616) so that we can rectify the problem.

Why do I get the error message, "Netscape unable to locate server. The server does not have a DNS entry. Check the server name in the location (URL) and try again".

This message occurs when the site location has been entered incorrectly or the link you are using has the incorrect or an old address. Check to make sure the address is correct, including periods, slashes, and the correct letter case.

The other reason you may be getting this message is that your modem is not connected to the Borealis modem. If this is the case, make sure you have dialled up correctly (562-7200), and your modem connections are attached.

If all else fails, it may be possible that the server you are trying to reach is down; therefore, try again later.
